Custom illustrations for the Maxicare Members Portal, developed through mascot exploration, stakeholder feedback, and a change in creative direction.
Alongside my UI design work for the Maxicare Members Portal, I created custom illustrations for healthcare services, appointment information, and interface states.
The work began with a visual consistency challenge: Maxicare's existing bear mascot appeared in multiple illustration styles. I proposed a unified treatment for its use within the portal. After stakeholders rejected the proposal, I adapted the direction and developed a cohesive set of object-based spot illustrations.
As an individual contributor, I explored the mascot direction, created sketches and character variations, and presented the proposal to stakeholders. Following feedback and team discussions, I created the final spot illustrations.
My focus was a consistent visual style, with each asset connected to the service or message it accompanied.
Custom spot illustrations cover service entry points, lab results, appointments, empty states, unavailable services, and server errors. The set uses flat geometric shapes, rounded forms, and a blue-led palette with supporting accent colors. Recurring elements, including calendars, speech bubbles, and medical objects, connect the assets while giving each illustration a distinct purpose.
The illustrations support the accompanying interface labels and messages, extending the portal's visual language across different situations.
Maxicare's existing bear artwork featured several different visual treatments, and bringing them into one portal would make a cohesive illustration style hard to maintain. I proposed a unified version of the mascot that could adapt across interface situations while keeping its connection to the familiar character.
Starting with rough sketches, I explored consistent proportions, shapes, poses, and expressions, and a doctor's coat in place of the casual T-shirt to connect the bear more directly to healthcare.
I presented the mascot proposal to stakeholders, explaining the consistency challenge and showing how the character could work across the portal.
The existing mascot appeared in several visual treatments.
Consistent proportions, poses and expressions, plus a doctor's coat.
Stakeholders preferred the current mascot over the proposed version.
After further discussion, we agreed on spot illustrations instead.
I shifted the direction toward healthcare objects and interface situations, keeping the original goal of a cohesive illustration set.
The final deliverable was a custom spot illustration set selected for the Members Portal, while the redesigned mascot remained an unused exploration. The project reinforced explaining the problem behind a creative proposal and adapting to stakeholder decisions: although the approach changed, I carried the consistency goal into the final assets through shared colors, forms, and visual details.
